NPR and other public access media

So they are at it again…the right/the silly/the selfish/the fascists or whatever descriptor fits. Today the Republican-led House of Representative voted to cut funding to the NPR. There is of course no shocker here!
You see the right is very content to believe that they don’t have any “real” opposition globally. However every once in a while their rogue arm finds some dirt on entities to prove that not everyone believe in a press that is right-winged and not everyone is stupid (I refer here to the latest undercover scandal where the NPR CEO was supposedly caught saying “bad things” about the Tea Party)…we all know how great they are!!
Perhaps what is disconcerting is not that the House could propose such an item but rather that it would pass and that the snarky comments of the proposers would be quoted so boldly. What is also disconcerting is that the possibility that the Senate democrats will not pass this item serves as some comfort to folks without vision. The very act of the senate today was a blow. A huge blow to news and public media a blow that is currently being felt in other parts of the world. Somehow in the land of recessions and conservatism (one and the same) freedoms get eroded. freedom of opinion, truth, expression and even labour rights can be depleted in the name of savings and the “good of the people”. As I sit in Canada watching the impact of these freedoms being threatened even here, as I watch the apathy and sometimes anger that accompanies these talks about cuts…I can only hope that its a quick death so the revolts can begin. Nothing worst than life supports and bandaids while we die socially, politically, emotionally and rationally. “How long shall they kill our prophets, while we stand aside and look…”
